D.C. to Reward, Dismiss Teachers Based on Evaluations
The District of Columbia plans to give raises and bonuses to more than 600 teachers and dismiss some 206 others based on data generated by its teacher-evaluation system, officials announced today. This is a hot mess, why would people be recieving raises if 206 people ae going to be dismissed. The nationally watched IMPACT evaluation system was created under former Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee. Officials fleshed out the dismissal and bonus components of the system through a collective bargaining pact signed last year with the Washington Teachers Union. This teachers unit sounds like that event's going on in the state of Alabama. To many teachers are losing their jobs and I hate that.
According to this year's results, 663 D.C. teachers were rated the highest level, "highly effective," and are eligible to receive performance bonuses of up to $25,000. Of those teachers, 290 will get base-salary increases as well. How can a teacher earn $25,000 dollars off of an evaluations.Where are they getting this money from, someone please tell me. The district will terminate 65 teachers who received "ineffective" ratings, along with 141 others whose performance didn't improve enough over last year. in some states this would never happen. In some states this need's to happen each and every year.Another 94 teachers will be dismissed for not maintaining a valid license, and a handful of teachers who lost their placements and could not find new ones will be let go.
Other teachers' performance improved enough to avoid being terminated. 58 percent of the 566 teachers who last year received the rating of "minimally effective," the second lowest under the system, were rated "effective" or "highly effective" this year. The IMPACT teacher-evaluation system was rolled out in the 2009-10 school year and underwent revisions for the 2010-11 school year. It is one of the first operational teacher-evaluation systems in the nation to grade teachers using a combination of classroom observations by principals and a measure of growth in students' test scores. The WTU has criticized the system in the past, particularly for the schoolwide student-achievement component, which bases a small portion of each teacher's score on the performance of the school as a whole.

States Continue Push to Toughen Teacher Policies
As the majority of legislative sessions around the country come to a close, many states will finish the season having pushed through policy changes that are likely to have a notable impact on teachers.I can relate to this topic. "States have to make the budget work each and every year.Building on the momentum from the previous two years, in which lawmakers began aggressively pursuing teacher-related reforms, about a dozen states passed laws since January that curb or otherwise modify teacher tenure, teacher evaluations, last-in-first-out policies, and collective bargaining." Are they realing thinking about the children or how much money they can keep in the budget.Taking away a tenure bill will kill teachers and their job performace. And several more states are on the verge of passing similar laws as they wrap up their legislative sessions.
"Jennifer Dounay Zinth, a senior policy analyst at the Denver-based Education Commission of the States , which has been tracking the legislation closely, said the protracted interest in revamping the teaching profession amounts" Revamping please dont let me start on revamping. Let me run the state or national school system for a month. Just joking, the states are doing a great job protecting teachers and thier livly hood. Why is this happening at a time when the U.S. should be on a track of recovering from a depression. Some teachers work there butts of for tenure but, if the states are not going to have our back on other issues, whats the point.
Policies need to be put in place to protect, not hurt teachers.Think about it this way, teachers are the only one's that reach out to everyone everyday. Why let the teachers that don't do there jobs go and keep the one's that do. Why not make a law that protects teachers from getting cursed out by parents or standing up for themself's when students are wrong.I am sorry but, i am a little tired and upset at the push to toughen these teacher policies. I hope and pray that one day, this will get better.

10 ways to use your blog....
1. Share materials, news, downloads, links and more. Anything that you post to your blog will instantly be accessible by your students from school and from home. What’s more, you can easily manage who gets to access them through passwords and privacy measures. This is very helpful to school's now days. I can use my blog to inform students and parents on upcoming information about the Midfield High School band program. The days of sending out paper work are over and I am so glad that it is.
2. Facilitate online discussions and collaboration. Forms can be used on my blog to give out information about discussions and band uni-forms and where the band would like to go for thier spring trip. Students can simply respond to blog posts and discuss topics through comments or on our simple to use forums.Collboration should be the key between parents and students. I hate parents calling my phone and the blog would give them a great way to ask questions.
3. Create a class publication that students can easily publish to and you can easily edit. This makes a great class project. Who wouldn't love to create a music blog. The blog can be used as a website for a class. Just think about it. A student could learn how to blog and use it to start their own blog for a local band or even event's. They could use all type's of designs to create their blog and information.Seamlessly produce a custom designed, finely tuned and engaging collaborative online publication by your class.
4. Replace your newsletter and stay in touch with parents about what is going on in class. Who hates going to the photocopy and run paper work off and pass it out all the time. You can post class information, news, events, and more on something called an edublog. My teacher has got us on these blogs and we can't get off them. I really hate doing a newletter every week so this will help me bye doing it over my blog on my planning period.
5. Get your students blogging so that they can share their work and thoughts
Students can share information with other students from around the world. Information can be used to glue together your students’ blogs which you can quickly create, co-manage, and even edit if needed. One thing, the blog has to be used in the right way. Using edublog, will allow students the right to use their creative to express themself's.
6. Share your lesson plans,we all love planning, right? This will be so helpful.Collaborative work is always great. Teacher from all over the globe caan reflect on your lesson plan and other forms you create. This is very helpful with lesson that you have be having trouble planning.Using an Edublog can turn planning and reflecting on classes into a genuinely productive – and even collaborative – experience.
7. Integrate videos, podcasts, and other media. Podcats and integrate are great to use. Video can be used to make assessment. letting your students get feedback on practice, classwork and other assessment will allow your students to grow.In just a couple of clicks, you can embed online videos, multimedia presentations, slideshows and more right into your Edublog posts. You can also share thought by using programs like present.me.
8. Create blogs for clubs, student groups, events, sports teams, or just about any type of group. I used my blog for class to inform my highschool band program. The information will be provide to keep the kids infrom on event and educational information.Edublogs make it easy to organize groups by keeping everyone informed.
9. Get feedback or gather information, this may be the most important use of ther blog. Getting feedback or comments from information on my blog. I can make a form with information about t-shirt size's and I dont have to make a call or send paper=work out. This is great and a new way for students to give input on related information. You can use comments, forums, or even customized forms to collect feedback, survey data, or ask anyone you’d like to give input or ideas.
10. Create a fully functional website, easy way to use right. One of the great things about Edublogs is that they are much, much more than just blogging tools. In fact, you can use your edublog to create a multi-layered, in-depth, multimedia rich website – that hardly looks like a blog at all.I also am using my blog as my website, adding pictures and other information. Students can read information about me and see pictures of upcoming event's. I love using my blog, it was a great idea to use them for our tech class this summer at Samford.

Top Blogs!!!
This research was based on an experiment, both for a client and for a recent presentation on finding relevant bloggers. The creater decided to cast a wider net that actually needed and share the results with everyone. Why create a blog, what is the point. First a blog is a way to express one's educational thoughts or just a way to get information outlike in a website. How does a good blog differ from a bad blog. This will be helpful to show the differance of the two kinds of blogs.
First, because no automated method or service exists to collect the top blogs in a given category,a list was compiled manually. The possibility then, for human error, oversight and just plain not finding all of the blogs that can be considered is there. Some people can see oversight and some can not. We are humans and every thing that you see please don't belive. The blogger amitted that he may have missed a few of the wrong type of blogs. What is the information placed in these blogs? Is it the correct information, or is the information wrong. Some people place information just because they know people are going to read the words and belive it.But,these days are like that. Somethings you can never belive ever.Alot of the blogs that were discovered were , to disclose and explain why writter of the post was digging around looking for education blogs.
In order to include top education bloggers interested in early childhood education and literacy issues in the dissemination of the research results, the blogger conducted the research to find relevant bloggers. Because the blogger were focused on early childhood education and literacy as a specific topic, his targeted list isn’t necessarily reflected in the results for the top education blogs.Education blogs are the best, so much informstion are giving to improve one's thoughts about edcation. It also, informs us on great information. I didn't like blogs because i didnt understand how to use one. Now, I love giving the information out over my own blog.

Legendary Black college band director dies at 82!
@marchingsport
Black college marching band legend Dr. Thomas E. Lyle has died. Lyle was famous for perfecting the famed marching band style of high-stepping that is seen at historically Black colleges and universities and helping expose America to dynamic Black college marching bands in the 1960s and 1970s. He was 82 years old when he passed away.
Lyle passed away last Thursday and is best known for serving as director of the historically Black Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets band from 1964 to 1988 in Montgomery, Ala.This was the start of a great tradition for the Marching Horents; which is one of the largest HBCU Bands in the United States. He also served as director of the Stillman College Blue Pride Marching Band in Tuscaloosa, Ala. A building on the campus is named after him. Lyle rebuild that program from bottom to top.
During his time at Alabama State, Lyle joined in the effort with other directors to bring Black college marching bands to the national audience during the Civil Rights Movement by having the Marching Hornets perform halftime shows on televised NFL games. Under Lyle’s leadership during his early years at Alabama State, the Marching Hornets performed at a football game between the New York Giants and the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967 televised on NBC and in 1969 at a game between the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers on CBS. He would continue to showcase the Marching Hornets at NFL games into the 1970s.
Lyle is also credited with sharpening performance style and structure of Black college marching bands. The Marching Hornets’ trademark "double time" step, which has an entire football field of band members swiftly marching 360 steps per minute collectively, was perfected by Lyle. Many other black college bands like FAMU also made the art form of marching a world-wide style.
"He was a man who had very high expectations of us as band members and as individuals," said Oliver. "He never raised his voice, but he had a subtle way of letting you know what he wanted and making sure that you did it."
Lyle was a graduate of Tennessee State University and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Lyle and children Thomas, Britt, Brian, Kevin, April and Courtney along with six grandchildren

Determining The Top Education Blogs
http://www.socialmediaexplorer.com/social-media-marketing/determining-the-top-education-blogs/
When look ing for the top educational blogs what must are the factors that determine what are the top blogs."First, because no automated method or service exists to collect the top blogs in a given category, the list compiled was done so manually." This means that no one collects data on top blogs. To me, that's a good job for a person do do.With no one performing this duty there is a possibility for human error, oversight and just plain not finding all of the blogs that can be considered is there.
"The National Center for Family Literacy, one of Doe-Anderson’s favorite social media clients, announced the results of some fairly significant research last week." This is very help and important to education. Most of the informationabout blogs say the same thing. Blogs are created to get information to people.
In order to include top education bloggers interested in early childhood education and literacy issues in the dissemination of the research results, they conducted the research to find relevant bloggers. Relevant bloggers are the educators and other people that are putting out good informaton to the public. They focused on early childhood education and literacy as a specific topic, there targeted list isn’t necessarily reflected in the results for the top education blogs. What makes a blog the top edcaution blog. If a teacher has a blog for his/her classroom, that could be one of the best blogs on the network. But, I think they were looking for the best blog with information concering education.Education is moving in a new wave with the rest of the world.
What type of information goes into an edublog. First, the blog has to have good informaton about the topic. I love my blog because, it allows me to get the information out to my parents. My parents love reading the information about tripd and other things concern thier children. My student's think that it is cool to have information over the blog. They ask many questions about how to do one. Me and the tech teacher at my school have been talking about projects the kids can do in both classes.

Bill Cosby Interviews Deborah Kenny On Revolutionary Schools
@BillCosby view full profile →-
Bill Cosby asked Deborah Kenny about the events that are causing her school to be succesful. He gave her a lists of questions that really asked about the process that goes on in the revolutionary schools.Cosby asked What are you doing that other schools aren't?
Deborah Kenny answerd that our country's approach to education has been wrong for decades. We're failing because we treat teachers like factory workers—they teach a prescribed curriculum from preselected books.Wow just take the words out of my mouth, why dont you. Other school's around the counrty are running great environments of learning. The Harlem Village Academies in Harlem NY, based thier findings on one core idea: belief in the power of teachers. They coach teachers weekly on how to make lessons more challenging and interesting for the kids and give them the freedom to run their own classrooms. That engenders passion and dedication, and in the end those schools can hold our teachers accountable for results.
Cosby wonder why this school estimated over 500 applicants for one teacher opening. What makes you look at someone and say, "You're it!"? This is amazing that teachers want to teach at a high level. But, just think! This is one of the best schools in the counrty. Who would not want to teach at a schoollike this. Of course teachers have to know their subjects inside and out. But the real question we want answered is. Do you believe that all children have the potential to learn? Yes all children have the potential to learn something. There are some educators who say things like some kids just won't make it or Let's go easy on these kids since they're poor or black and Hispanic.Lol, no one goes easy on me. But, really I think that if I was giving every thing I would not repect it. This would not be a good way of thinking and revolutionary schools don't want people with that attitude working in there school.
The revolutionary schools offer a program for kids that fall behide called "catching up." They don't use standardized tests as our measure because passing them is just the beginning. They want thier students to be sophisticated thinkers who are creative and able to study at an intense level. And it can take up to four years to get them to that level. But, it comes over time. The last quetion Cosby asked was about schools not following this successful example. In America there are so many children that live in poverty. But, this doesn't mean that they can't make it in life. But they will learn many lessons over the years and are now figuring out how to share that knowledge with educators around the country. That's a critical first step to solving the education problem nationally.

Cheating on state standardized test.
educationweek
Dozens of schools across the nation were flagged in a study from 2009, that state standardized test scores that sought to use statistical analysis to ferret out possible examples of cheating on the PSSA exam. Now, this just happen in Atlanta, Ga. Most of our schools have very low test scores but, is this a reason to cheat. Why not just teach the information.I am so tired of this topic. In most of our schools, teachers are teaching standardized test concepts for understanding. How is this helping our children? It is not, helping our students at all. These students dont know how to read or write. It is hurting tham when they get to places of higher learning. This is killing the education system.
They did a study of the Pennsylvania Department of education. The analysis, prepared for the Pennsylvania Department of Education in July 2009, highlights roughly 60 schools with suspicious results due to multiple statistical irregularities, including 22 Philadelphia district schools and seven Philadelphia charters. So, are they saying that these schools are cheating on the test. If anything, this is talking about the schools in the enter city. Among the Philadelphia district schools referenced in the report is Roosevelt Middle School, which has been at the center of a controversy this year involving alleged cheating on the PSSA.
An enter-city school that has been felling state test for many years.
In 2009, the analysis reveals, results of both the reading and math PSSA exams taken by Roosevelt's 7th and 8th graders showed a highly unlikely number of wrong answers that were erased and changed to the correct answer. The results also showed highly improbable increases over the previous year in the percentage of students that scored higher on these test. This sounds like the same thing that just happen in Ga. People let teach our students and make sure taht they have the best education we can give. This makes me mad, it is time for the education department to step up.Let's not just let anything fly anymore.

Teachers Speak Out!!!
@EdWeekTeacher
Frustrated by a lack of opportunity for teachers to participate in policy decisions, a Florida teacher has launched a new website which aims to connect teachers across the state and address issues important to educators. Mike Rychlik, who teaches at SAIL High School in Leon County, Fla., told Florida Today that state leaders have done little to include teachers' input in discussions surrounding legislation changes and education reform, and so he decided to take matters into his own hands.
"It's pretty depressing to go to House and Senate meetings and listen to education committee discussions, to hear how uniformed they are about the brass tacks of educating young people," said Rychlik. This is the same thing that is going on in each and every state. People other then in the field of education are coming up with legislation on teacher everyday. I am so tired of these people cutting pay and now even taking away teachers tenure. With no tenure how will teachers be able to think about what they are teaching rather then how to make higher level officials happy with their work.
"According to the paper, the new site, Empowereducators.org, will encourage teachers to "hold town meetings, share experiences and stay on top of pending legislation and election cycles."John Schaller, another teacher at SAIL High School, commented that websites like Rychlik's "will help teachers understand they have a say, too." Schaller added that he hopes the grass-roots effort becomes "contagious" and helps teachers realize that their voices are important to the education debate. Teachers all across the nation have the same feelings. I feel like teachers should speak out on the important issues. Teachers are losing rights each and every day because, of our state leaders. What is happening to our schools, if there are no rights for teachers how can they teach.

Elizabeth Gilbert muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses -- and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person "being" a genius, all of us "have" a genius. It's a funny, personal and surprisingly moving talk.I belive that everyone is a genius in sometype of fashion. Artists use there talents by creating ideas and putting their ideas in to sometype of plan.
A creative process, even if it's a little thing like writing some lyrics for your garage band, can be a real burden and frustrating, sometimes it looks like you could write a thousand books, other times it just makes you want to give up forever.Gilbert really believes that this attitude towards the creative genius will just help it flow more naturally, creativity flows better without pressure. Creativity flows through the body and the mind. This makes teaching fun to me when I see kids coming up with new ideas.
I got alot out of this information, it really makes you think about how to create real world experiance, that your students will learn from.
Benjamin Zander has two infectious passions: classical music, and helping us all realize our untapped love for it and by extension, our untapped love for all new possibilities, new experiences, new connections. This tedtalk is so funny to me. Zander is a smart man with talents of 100 men.
It's cool that he connects music to life through examples that everyone can understand, the "procrastination" of both Chopin and Hamlet, the "vision" of both Chopin and Mandela. I had a teacher who always noted that music doesn't exist in a vacuum, instead it is reflective of the people's lives. This is a great way of thinking. Since alot of schools are taking the arts out of our schools.People like Zander can stand up for us with this type of information.
It's incredible that people today can identify with and have an emotional response to this piece of music, considering it was written in the early/mid 1800's.You can laugh then, close your eyes and listen to some of the great music of all time.I was amazed to listen to the great music that was coming from the paino. It gave me a clear understanding of my thoughts.

Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity. To allow creativity we must open doors to closed minds and create new paths. I am just starting to give worth to what I create, to be accepting of it's value, to be aware that I am who I create and will attract other like minds when I value my true essences. As a teacher of young minds I want to provide the environment that will produce thought provoking conversations, acknowledgement of who they are, and guidance to who they can be. In my class creativity is a must. My students have to creativity, not only in music but all other forms of education. One does not have to be the smartest person every but creativity gives them a process of different ways to see things. I have be trying to post my comments for days. Technology can be your wrost friend sometimes.
